Vivek Shraya: If We’re Not Talking 2007 Skinsongs

By: Lidia Vila
If We’re Not Talking by Vivrek Shraya is a total departure from his previous album A Composite of Straight Lines (2005). Instead of a follow up acoustic album If We’re Not Talking delivers a playful, delightful and bouncy electronic album guaranteed to inspire head bobbing, shoulder shifting and hip swaying.
Track two “Chemistry” goes for shock value with usage of “motherfucker.” With such audible influences as Bowie, Timberlake and the Killers, Shraya shows he is just as comfortable singing over a synth, as he is an acoustic guitar. This album is definitely an expression of an edgier darker Shraya, coming out of his shell and showing a new direction. Not an artist to pigeonhole, Shraya exhibits believable diversity with ease.
Similar to that of Nelly Furtato who surprised the music industry with her new album sound, Shraya does the same and is able to pull it off and then some.
