Interview: In Perfect Cursive January 2008

By: Lidia Vila
From your bio, you started off as a duo and became a quartet. What do you think you’ve found by having two additional members?

Andrew: Well, I think going from a duo to a four-member band definitely changed the way we approach the music. As a duo, we’d shut ourselves in a room and hammer away on a song for hours until it came out the way we liked. Now, we take fully developed ideas to practices and then members add their own specific sound to the song. I guess now it’s more than just a casual hobby.

Chris: Being a part of the two additional members who were added to the band, I feel that the songs as a duo were very well written. By adding Mike and I, it took the songs to the next level. By making the band four members, it has also allowed everyone in the band to make our live show more exciting not only for people at the shows to watch, but for the band to play as well.

Coming from Sutton, how would you compare northern audiences to that of Torontonians?

Mike: I would say audiences up north are more willing to drive to get to a show. They know if they want to see a band in Sutton it’s going to be at a fair or a festival. But to see the same band at a wicked venue, they’re going to have to suck it up and drive to Toronto. Aside from that, I mean they’re both there for the music.

Your first EP Written By The Knife sold 100 copies in two days. What do you expect by the end of the year?

Andrew: Minor correction. We stated the first 100 copies were gone in 2 days. We actually hand out our demos for free to fans, so we don’t expect people to pay for a band they don’t know anything about. That’s where we hook them. By the end of 2008, we would love to be playing a lot more shows, spreading out from just the Toronto scene. I mean we love playing Toronto shows, but we’d love to make a career of music and there are many other major city centers to promote our sound to.

Mike: Can you expect to be knighted? Does that just happen? Elton John got knighted, and I think that’d be sweet. Really, I think we’re just expecting to have more fans and I’d think it wouldn’t be too far out thinking about a full length album.

How do you feel you’re different from other bands?

Chris: I don’t feel we are much different from other bands. The goal for our band and most bands is to enjoy what you are creating and eventually become a touring band, taking the music to different cities.

Dale: What it really comes down to is how much we love what we are doing and how much that comes through on the EP, our live show and just through the band in general. We all put everything we have into writing great music, and giving people a good show when they come see us. I feel like we are genuine in all aspects of our art, and that’s what separates us.

What’s next?

Dale: I think we want, and really need, to take another step forward. Coming from a small town, we need to get our faces out in the big city as much as we can. We should keep bringing fresh and unique ideas to the table, as well as trying to meet everyone who enjoys our music. At the end of the day it’s the fans that keep you moving forward.

Chris: Definitely more shows in Toronto to gain more fan base. Once we have succeeded there, we will start expanding our horizons to different cities, and eventually start small Ontario based tours. Next: total world domination!

Andrew: Maybe some roadies. Ha!

Mike: Yeah, our friend and roadie Stan works far too hard lugging our stuff around. I think we’d like to get him some help.
