Interview: Beautiful Nothing - August 2006

By: Ilona Fridman

What does “Beautiful Nothing” mean?

Anthony Ludgate: It’s the contrast that everything has. Every action has a reaction, so if something is going really well at one time, there is probably something else going on at the same time that is just as bad. It’s just the good and bad with life in general.

How did you come up with the name?
Anthony: James Featherstone (bass) and I were in French class and he was thinking up names for another band (a side project). I saw “Beautiful Nothing” on the list and asked him if I could have it.

What was the first song or album that spoke to you growing up?
Anthony: Metallica did it for me.

Luke Ludgate: I think my revelation was Paranoid Android, Radiohead.

James: Marylin Manson for me.

Shane Ludgate: I’d say Metallica. They have the rippin’ solos and raw energy.

In March you opened for The Trews in Hamilton. What was that like?
Anthony: It was pretty sweet. I wish the guys had stuck around and watched our set though. It was sold out and we got to open ourselves up to a wider audience, so that was cool.

Luke: Actually, I found that I play way better at small shows than I do big ones.
Luke, Anthony and Shane, you guys are brothers. Do you think that makes the band stronger?
Luke: I know it sounds like BS, but I don’t even feel like there’s a line between Anthony and James. He’s pretty much just another guy.

Anthony: We pretty much all grew up together.

Shane: With three of us in the house it helps with the practicing.

James: With the brothers, though, there’s no mercy if there are ever any arguments.

You are known for a great live performance and high-energy vibe. What do you want people to take away from your shows?
Anthony:
A hell of a good time.

Shane: A memorable experience.

Anthony: It depends on what the audience wants. If they want to have a party and a good time, then that’s what we deliver. If they want to come to our show, be intrigued and see something with a bit more depth, we want them to be satisfied too.

What’s up next for Beautiful Nothing?
Luke:
We’re planning a trip to the cottage to write on the beach for a whole week of solitude.

Anthony: And a DVD that our man John Baxter is working on right now [indeed, he was filming during the interview]. That should be done for September or October.

Shane: Great things.
